Do you know how to build your credit? No? Neither do I. Most millennials don’t know enough when it comes to saving and planning for their financial future! In fact most of us now live pay to pay with very little savings, whether it be for that big special day, an emergency washer or a house deposit. Now that is a scary realisation! To help people along GiffGaff have now created GiffGaff Gameplan
. First they revolutionised the mobile industry and now they want to do the same with personal finance. We were invited down to The Principle hotel
in Manchester to hear all about their new venture along with a host of other tips for thrifty living.
I am a super crafty person and have always been brought up making and baking, we would always homemake Christmas and Birthday cards along with pieces of jewellery. So, when I saw the workshop we were going to have with Hannah from Tea and Crafting
I was super excited. This was all about using old clothes to make funky headbands or necklaces – a skill which everyone could take home, not only that but make us understand the potential of our old glad rags.
This session was with Duncan from Herb & Spice
on cooking on a budget. He had some great tips for us and cooked up delicious dish! He made a point that you can eat cheaper if you don’t opt for meat with every meal – a fair point at that – not only is that good for your wallet, but for the environement and the animals. Use hearty filling ingrediants to keep fuller for longer, use veg like sweet potato to bulk dishes out and opt for seasonal veggies! Add a tasty carb like orzo or cous cous, and then reuse your leftovers to make a new meal.
One womans trash is another womans treasure! We were all invite to take part in a swap shop – something I did at uni and loved. If you are a charity shop lover then this is the one for you. People brought in their old clothes which were all set on a rail and then we were able to flick through and swap for the items we want.
This part was all about GiffGaff gameplan, where we were quizzed on out knowledge of credit history and building along with personal finance. Turns out I’m not that shabby as I won a bottle of champers! woo! But in all honesty we learnt that:
- 2/3 of adults have no financial goals or plan in place to achieve them
- 1 in 5 of us can’t read a bank statement
- 21 million adults dont have more than £500 in savings
That is scary stuff and that is where the gameplan comes into play. Want to get all you financial stuff in one place – here you can have access to
- Credit checks
- Goal hub
- Compare the market
- Check eligability for credit cards
- Smart switching
- Smart budgeting
- An online community full of thrifty ideas.
