Have you ever moved city and found it hard to meet new people? Or just fancied have more on your friends list? Ever thought of speed dating but the idea of letchy men creep you out? Well then I think speed dating is made for you! Some people find it easy to make friends and parties and nights out. However if your a newbie or someone who can be shy then this experience can be rather daunting. Speed mating takes all the discomfort out the situation.

So what is Speed Mating?

Well its what it says on the tin. Described as a mixture of teenage slumber parties, dating shows and bad business meetings, it is the perfect environment to meet people and make friends. The fact is you are all there for one reason and that is to make friends. Some maybe more open than others but deep down your looking for that cinema buddy, the one you can call whose always up for anything or when you just fancy that glass of wine. This is what makes it great.

So who are The Girl Gang?

As a blogger you see then hashtag thrown around everywhere and I still wonder if the two are related. Hopefully they will clarify after this. If so this is the side I was yet to know. The one that is a collective of female artists, creatives, thinkers and do-ers who run an award winning event series of immersive screenings, workshops, parties, skill sharing sessions and socials to create a community of people of all genders in Manchester promoting creativity, collaboration, confidence and positivity, to help inspire and support women to succeed in life work and society. Empowering the females together. Anyways the MCR crew were totally fabulous and put on a sweet night for us all to enjoy. I am pretty sure like me everyone left with a few more friends in their pocket.

So what happens in Speed Mating?

I was super shy when I arrived even though I went with a friend. However as I recently moved back to Manchester I was so glad she called me out to attend! I hit the bar straight away for Dutch courage and slunk to the back of the room to the naughty kids table! There was a couple of people clearly feeling my vibe as they joined me. I quickly broke the ice and made everyone feel really uncomfortable by taking pictures with the disposable cameras dangling from the ceiling. Ha old school me loves it.

There were many a rounds to the night consisting of a number of  conversational activities. First off we were given a list of things and we had to find people that had done or could do said things. Me and new friend El quietly began to rap the Fresh Prince so I was onto a winner. Other games included slumber faves such as Snog Marry or Avoid, selling yourself without using negatives, selling a random object and discussing various other topics. That is were I met Rebecca and Hannah and got my first vlog selfie. They were more than happy to oblige, and we discovered that we liked to watch the same things and go the same places. See the perfect place to meet like minded people. Another task that I loved was where we looked around their co existing exhibition #seemyselfie, where they used 31 online provocations aimed at exploring the contentious nature of ‘the selfie’ as a vehicle for self representation. We had to pick a partner look around and choose one to imitate. This is where I met super cool Emma who rocked red lipstick like I wish I could. We chose the turn my body into art and well you can see below how it turned out.

Then we did a catwalk show, and all took a group photo. There were so many people I didnt get a chance to talk to which was a shame. However the great thing is I met people that I just wanted to keep talking to. I even rode the bus home with the lovely Rebecca and I shall be meeting her and El tonight to head to a Night At The Museum. Thanks GG and can’t wait for the next one. Also big love to my Arms for bringing me along.
